Song of the Day #40: “The Night Santa Went Crazy,” by Wierd Al Yankovic

12 Jul

            Wierd Al Yankovic

Wierd Al!?! Yes, I am sure many of you are surprised that I would go to the level of clever musical parodies. Well, I just saw Bruno tonight where I was both grossed out and put in stitches so I have decided to devote this song of the day to gross musical comedy. But, come one who does not like some Wierd Al. My favorite has always been “The Night Santa Went Crazy,” mainly because the lyrics are hilarious. Yet, behind the comical lyric there also is a song. A song that Wierd Al adopted from three different songs. What people generally miss is the talent of Wierd Al. Just because the music is funny does not mean it is not good. The song is actually quite creative

“The Night Santa Went Crazy,” takes portions of a Greg Lake song, an Ozzy Osbourne song, and a Soul Asylum song. It merges these very different songs together in order to create a song where Santa Claus snaps and massacres his reindeer and his elves. The song ends with the elves working at the post office and Mrs. Claus negotiating a movie deal.

Lyric of the Day #40: “King of Carrot Flowers Part I,” by Neutral Milk Hotel

12 Jul

Neutral Milk Hotel

Today was busy. Five hours on the golf course and then hung out with some friends at night. A very nice Saturday that left me absolutely no time to get on a computer and since, unfortunately, I am running a one man show here at The Music Court I was not able to post a lyric or song of the day. I can hear the critics now (Why does he always say we at the music court when he is just one person? That is just stupid.) So it is 2:24 on Sunday morning and I thought I would give some lyrics to all you insomniacs. This song showed up on my favorites Ipod playlist on my way home during a miserable rain storm. So, without further ado, “King of Carrot Flowers Part 1.” Yes, I absolutely love this band and especially this incredible song.

“When you were young
You were the king of carrot flowers
And how you built a tower tumbling through the trees
In holy rattlesnakes that fell all around your feet

And your mom would stick a fork right into daddy’s shoulder
And dad would throw the garbage all across the floor
As we would lay and learn what each other’s bodies were for

And this is the room
One afternoon I knew I could love you
And from above you how I sank into your soul
Into that secret place where no one dares to go

And your mom would drink until she was no longer speaking
And dad would dream of all the different ways to die
Each one a little more than he could dare to try”

I absolutely love the bolded segment. It is haunting. Come back a little later for an always awesome song of the day and some weekend links
