Musical Lexicon – “I Want a New Drug” – My Answers

25 Feb

I apologize, I’m a few days late with my answers for this topic, and a few days late for posting up the next topic. It’s been a crazy week for me, with really good things and really bad things happening rapid fire.

Topic – Drugs

Alcohol

Night and Day – The Good Life

“All that sorrow and alcohol weighs hard on her thoughts.”

Tobacco

Come Round Soon – Sara Bareilles

“I could use another cigarette. But don’t worry daddy, I’m not addicted yet.”

Marijuana

Captain Jack – Billy Joel

“So you play your albums, and you smoke your pot.”

Cocaine

Night Train – Amos Lee

“I’ve been working on a night train. Drinkin’ coffee, taking cocaine.”

Crack

LDN – Lily Allen

“A fella lookin’ dapper and he’s sittin’ with a slapper then I see it’s a pimp and his crack whore.”

Heroin

Heroin – Velvet Underground

Heroin, be the death of me. Heroin, it’s my wife and it’s my life.”

Pills

Zoloft – Ween

“Gimme that Z – O – L – O – F – T.

LSD

Acid Tongue – Jenny Lewis

“I’ve been down to Dixie and dropped acid on my tongue.”

Ecstasy

Coat Check Dream Song – Bright Eyes

“I slept with that dealer all summer, the ecstasy still in my spine.”

Meth

Semi-Charmed Life – Third Eye Blind

“Doing crystal meth will lift you up until you break.”

Special bonus points to Matt for getting the only song I could think of that explicitly mentions Heroin, and an equal amount of points to Dave for getting the only Meth song.

Other songs that get honorable mention for this week’s topic are “Purple Pills” by Eminem and D12, as well as Pink’s “Just Like a Pill.” Both were contenders for that “pill” spot. I was also tempted to use “Gold Mine Gutted” by Bright Eyes for cocaine, because of the line “All those white lines that sped us up as we hurried to our death,” but ultimately decided the reference was too vague.

Next topic will be up tomorrow. Promise.

Another song that explicitly mentions Heroin, by the way, is Regina Spektor’s Daniel Cowman. “And heroin boy walked through the door…”

I already used it, though. Wasted it back in my first topic, colors, for the word “orange.”
