Song of the Day #16: “Wash Away,” by Joe Purdy

Over at EZine articles I recently came across a post by Danielle Hollister compiling the top 50 music quotations in history. At #4 came Berthold Auerbach’s (a famous German-Jewish poet and author) quotation, “Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” As many of you know I have been cursed with the unfortunate task of being  a Mets fan. The reason I consider it a task is because, similar to a dead-end job, it slowly kills you day in and day out as you wait for something better to finally come along. After a miserable loss a few hours ago I found myself quietly going to my refuge. Music. Yes, I may be acting a little melodramatic and the simplicity of the pictures above may lead to me being eventually institutionalized, but I have always leaned on music to give me some relief when times are not particularly great. When the notes of a good song flow into my ears I am calmed and worries tend to wash away.

That conveniently leads us into today’s song of the day. “Wash Away,” by Joe Purdy, a folk rocker who pumps out albums like a Fordian assembly line, is one of these songs that can simply relax you and help relieve you of the stress of your current worries and figuratively remove the dust that clouds your mind. It is a song that simply emits the basic message. Everyone has troubles in their life but you need that day, that hour, that minute where you can sit back and relax and say, “Not Today,” and watch the troubles wash away like receding water moving back to the sea.

You may recognize the song from an episode of “Lost.” If you are a fan of the show that means you are obsessed so you will definitely remember the episode and minute the song appeared. Purdy’s work has been also featured in such shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “House,” as well as a Kia commercial. His music is simple and catchy and the man understands the necessity of good rhythm and good melodies. He also seems like he has a good grip on life in general. So, while Josh will be posting the Lyrics of the Day later today, I thought I would provide you with the lyrics and to all you Mets fans out there struggling there are a lot of games left my friends and all you can do with this loss is let it wash away.

“ I got troubles oh, but not today
Cause they’re gonna wash away
They’re gonna wash away

And I have sins Lord, but not today
Cause they’re gonna wash away
They’re gonna wash away

And I had friends oh, but not today
Cause they’re done washed away
They’re done washed away

And oh, I’ve been cryin’
And oh, I’ve been cryin’
And oh, no more cryin’
No, no more cryin’ here

We get along Lord, but not today
Cause we gonna wash away
We gonna wash away

And I got troubles oh, but not today
Cause they gonna wash away
This old heart gonna take them away”

New Category! The Bad Jesters

12 Jun

The Bad Jesters

Have you ever heard a song on the radio that you just simply dislike. You turn it off quickly and forget all about it (or your forced to listen to it because your little sister/your mother/your girlfriend or boyfriend just loves the song for some wierd reason. Think back to that song. Why do you hate it so much?

With this new category we will focus on the bad jesters. Those who are not at all entertaining and certainly are not talented. It can be a set of lyrics, a song, an album, or a band in general. The only qualification is that it has to be popular and it has to be bad enough to be put on the Court’s Wall of Shame. Yes, the bad jesters will focus on those beats and words that just are plain poor.

We want to hear your thoughts. Who do you dislike? Comment about your most hated bands and inspire us to check out some more bad music. We dare you. Look for posts soon!

Links of the Day: Pink Floyd Video and some Lost Psychedelia

12 Jun

Links       My favorite band is Pink Floyd. Yes, I do admit that The Beatles are the greatest band of all time but Pink Floyd holds a special place in my heart mainly for their work on “Dark Side of the Moon” and “Wish You Were Here,” two albums that portray the pinnacle of psychedelic music. Yet, the link I bring you today comes from a very different Pink Floyd. A Floyd well before there first release of “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” in August of 1967. A Floyd that held a completely different sound under a different band leader named Syd Barrett. Of course, less then one year after this video was recorded Barrett performed his last concert with Pink Floyd and because of his unstability due to excess LSD usage and deteriorating mental health he was impossible to deal with on stage for he continually changed chord progressions and melodies to a mash-up of ideas in his head. But, here in February of 1967 we are still in the emerging years of the young Pink Floyd Sound and we should celebrate this awesome rare video from the UFO Club.

Pink Floyd 1967

At the end of the performance of the free form, “Interstellar Overdrive,” a particularly ugly Paul McCartney (sorry Paul) with a wierd mustache and long hair is interviewed about this rise in Psychedelic Music.  While his Paul McCartney and his Stache appearance may not be pleasant his view on this new music is sharp. He speaks of the rise of Psychedelia positively, saying that it is just simply a new way of expressing oneself through music and while people may fear it there is really no need to. Well, Paul, after watching this video with suited dancers dancing some warped mix of 50’s moves and swaying, and constant images of protests and ominous headlines I am honestly a little scared. After watching the video I just could not stop thinking to myself, Roger Waters should only know what he, Nick Mason, Richard Wright, and one guitarist with a haunting voice named David Gilmour will do in a few years time.

One more link for you guys on this Friday morning. Staying with the theme of Psychedelic let us focus on a band that got lost in the craze and never gained the respect they deserved. In 1967, Tomorrow became one of the first English Psychedelic bands, along with Pink Floyd and The Soft Machine. There single, ” My White Bicycle,” while being an interesting piece of rare psychedelia never gained much success. Probably, the best thing to come  from “Tomorrow” was Steve Howe who after “Tomorrow” became the guitarist for the much more succesful progressive rock group “Yes.”

Lyric of the Day #15: “Her Beautiful Ideas,” Guggenheim Grotto

12 Jun

         Guggenheim Grotto

Not many people have heard of Guggenheim Grotto, the multi-instrumental folk/pop band from Dublin, Ireland consisting of two musicians. Kevin May, who provides vocals, guitar, and keyboards and Mike Lynch who echoes May but replaces the keyboards with his bass. Talented is an understatement. I am not to sure why this band is not even more popular then the cult status they already have. They have toured the U.S. four times and have been featured in numerous, well respected publications like The Boston Globe.

So, to get the word out a little for this wonderful band I want to focus on a some of their lyrics from “Her Beautiful Ideas,” which appeared on their U.S 2009 release Happy The Man.

“If it rains now, i hope to God it pours
and with her beautiful ideas,
she’d cut me in half, clean this broad sword”

             – “Her Beautiful Ideas,” by The Guggenheim Grotto off of their album Happy The Man

It is the ideas that struck me. For, it is truly these beautiful ideas that continue to inspire people to embark on createve endeavours like starting a band. It is these ideas that swirl around in the head of everyone and if only ideas fell from the sky and figuratively cut each person in half and implanted the thought that they could make a difference in following their ideas and dreams, what a world it would be.

Swirling Ideas. I will leave you with this fantastic symbolism and imagery from the same song.

“She used to say that magic was the edge
and science and God
they were the sides of a copper penny piece
yeah and its far better to keep it spinning and spinning and spinning
than for one side to fall and to freeze”

  • Hello,

My name is Josh Baum and I am here to keep everyone updated on the music scene that has been developing since the beginning of the 90’s and after.  I mostly will be talking about the music coming from rock bands and anything stemming off from that but every so often I will delve into other genres but no matter what I can assure you the music will be great.
