Lyric of the Day #45: “Margaritaville,” by Jimmy Buffet

23 Jul

Jimmy Buffet has seemingly made a career about singing about places that you want to be. Luckily, I will be traveling to one of these vacation spots to sip Margaritas and waste away in a few days. From the 26th to early August I will be in Aruba. Therefore, from here until that date the blog shall be paused. But, before I leave you for a few days here are some lyrics by Buffet.

“Nibblin on sponge cake
Watchin the sun bake
All of those tourists covered with oil
Strummin my six-string
On my front porch swing
Smell those shrimp theyre beginnin to boil

Chorus:
Wastin away again in margaritaville
Searching for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that theres a woman to blame
But I know its nobodys fault

I dont know the reason
I stayed here all season
Nothin to show but this brand new tattoo
But its a real beauty
A mexican cutie
How it got here I havent a clue

Chorus:
Wastin away again in margaritaville
Searchin for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that theres a woman to blame
Now I think
Hell, it could be my fault

I blew out my flip-flop
Stepped on a pop-top
Cut my heel had to cruise on back home
But theres booze in the blender
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on

Wastin away again in margaritaville
Searching for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that theres a woman to blame
But I know its my own damn fault
Yes and some people claim that theres a woman to blame
And I know its my own damn fault”

Margaritaville

Lyric of the Day #44: “Down the Line,” by Jose Gonzalez

20 Jul

Today’s lyric of the day is from a Sweedish folk singer of Argentinian descent. Wow that is a moutful of interesting combinations. But, music is music and he is fantastic. His soft vocals mixed with a melodic acoustic guitar make him something special. Not to mention, he also is a pretty solid lyricist. “Down the Line,” comes off of his second album In Our Nature.     Interesting song and album. Here are some lyrics:

” I see problems down the line          Jose Gonzalez
I know that I’m right
I see darkness down the line
I know its hard to fight.
There was a dirt upon your hands
doing the same mistake twice
making the same mistake twice.”

– “Down the Line,” by Jose Gonzalez off of Down the Line

Lyrics of the Day #43: “Everything You Want,” by Vertical Horizon

Everything You Want

Yesterday we reached 2000 views. Woohoo!!! What does this mean for you. A lyric of the day with the connection to the number 2000. Let’s see. Well, we reached 2000 views on July 15th. So, how about to #1 single on the charts on July 15th, 2000. Can anyone guess what this was? There is a big clue in the title of the post. Yes, “Everything You Want,” otherwise known as that song with the horribly catchy chorus, hit #1 on the charts on July 15th, 2000. I remember listening to this song and loving it because it was so catchy. I still think it is a pretty good song.

“He’s everything you want
He’s everything you need
He’s everything inside of you
That you wish you could be
He says all the right things
At exactly the right time
But he means nothing to you
And you don’t know why

You’re waiting for someone
To put you together
You’re waiting for someone to push you away
There’s always another wound to discover
There’s always something more you wish he’d say”

“Everything You Want,” by Vertical Horizon off of the album Everything You Want

Lyric of the Day #42: “Jackson Square,” Mason Jennings

14 Jul

            Mason Jennings

I have a perfect lyric of the day for #42. As many know this is the answer to life the universe and everything according to “The Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy.” What if I was to tell you that the answer is in Jackson Square. Yes, Mason Jennings, the folk artist who I first saw opening for Guster at the Beacon Theatre in NYC experienced some wierd events at Jackson Square and put them in song and incredible lyric. Out of all lyrics the end of Jackson Square which outlines events while in Jackson Square maintains some of the best written lyrics ever and no I am not kidding. Just take a look for yourself.

“Life is something that you can’t control
When you try to hold onto it, it makes you let go
Things are not like they were before
I can hear her crying through the bathroom door

She says, she hears spirits all around the room
And they’re telling her things that make her feel scared
I have no idea what to do
Before we’re in over our heads in Jackson Square

I woke up with a weight on my chest
People were screaming on the street below
I reached for you, I was alone in the bed
Wind was blowing through an open window

Suddenly I was very old
In a little boat, absolutely nowhere
Staring at the side of the universe
And your tiny body down on Jackson Square

Now don’t tell me that there ain’t no end
There damn well is and it waits in the wings
I see you kneeling there at center stage
In your tiny cage made of angel wings

While I’m here every night
Loading my gun and trying not to go there
Anyone who says that life is clear
Has never seen a mirror or been to Jackson Square”

          – “Jackson Square,” by Mason Jennings off of Bone Clouds

So the ultimate answer is just like 42. Who knows? It is pretty confusing.

Lyric of the Day #41: “Centerfield,” by John Fogerty

13 Jul

         baseball

Don’t you just love baseball? The crack of the bat, the smell of freshly cut grass, the ballpark dogs, the crowd, the players, the overall atmosphere. It is the best drug in the world and I cannot get enough of it no matter how much my Mets kill me inside. It is the all star week and I just got done watching the home-run derby. So, in honor of the Great American Pasttime here are some baseball lyrics from America’s Prodigal Son, John Fogerty

“Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes;
You know I think it’s time to give this game a ride.
Just to hit the ball and touch ’em all – a moment in the sun;
(pop) it’s gone and you can tell that one goodbye!”

             – “Centerfield,” by John Fogerty released on his 1985 album Centerfield
