Bob Dylan: Hip-Hop’s Godfather? (The Origins of Hip Hop and Rap)

Response:

Have you ever seen the hilarious viral video about Bob Dylan writing every popular song in the last 35 years. You Haven’t? Okay, watch it.

Now that you are well versed in Dylan’s ability let’s look at the Rolling Stone article which asks the question: Is Bob Dylan Hip-Hop’s godfather? Godfather may be a good term because he is certainly not directly related. He can be considered a good friend. But, he just took from the same people that Hip Hop took from.

Hip Hop has two big influences. First, we must look at New York City in the late 1960’s into the 1970’s. African and Jamaican roots were rich in a burgeoning musical climate. Block parties, where these two cultural groups combined, became popular in especially the Bronx. DJ’s during these parties started combining funk and soul, with heavy isolation of percussion. This technique became known as Dub music and the style spread. Names like Afrika Bambaataa (Kevin Donovan), Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel, Keith Cowboy and, of course, The Sugarhill Gang starting popping up and thriving in this new atmosphere.

But, even before this culture appeared in New York, the origins of rap/hip hop really came from true African culture. Blues music and work songs of slavery (inspired by griots of West Africa who were poets who delivered rhythmic, spoken word poems) were played by blacks (some whites) in the Mississippi Delta region around the middle of the 19th century. This was around one hundred years before Bob Dylan was born. This music, in my opinion, was rap and hip hop’s predecessor. And, it not only led to blues, but also jazz. Jazz led to beat poetry and spoken word poems from musicians like Gil Scott-Heron. Similar in style, Lost Poets formed in 1969 and performed poetry over drum beats and other instruments. The Lost Poets are considered one of Hip Hop’s first bands.

It is always a chronological list, but, with most music the roots are deep in the slave culture of the south. Because, without blues or jazz, there is no rock or hip hop or rap or even country music. And, without these genres of music, we would not have a Billboard top 200 chart. Or, better yet, we wouldn’t have this blog.

So, in summation, Bob Dylan’s brand of lyric-heavy folk could certainly be considered a godfather. Someone who blessed the baby, but didn’t have a hand in raising it. But, the father and grandfather can be found in the African and Jamaican cultures of New York, and jazz/blues inspired by ancient African culture and the Mississippi culture in the 19th century. Wow, that was a mouthful.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Songs

25 Mar

Perhaps Jim Marshall’s most famous photograph depicts guitar legend Jimi Hendrix bathing his burning Stratocaster guitar with lighter fluid at The Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Hendrix is on his knees and deep in an odd sacrificial prayer. This iconic photograph of Hendrix immolating his guitar is just one in a massive collection of some of rock n’ roll’s most enduring images. And, the man behind the camera for each photo in this illustrious collection is Jim Marshall. Marshall passed away yesterday in his sleep. He was 74.

Jimi Hendrix being...well...Jimi Hendrix

Marshall was born in Chicago in 1936 and raised in San Francisco. After purchasing a camera in high school, he began taking pictures of local musicians. After serving in the Air Force, Marshall had a chance encounter with John Coltrane. He gave Coltrane a lift and, in return, he allowed Marshall to take pictures of him. Marshall then moved to New York and was hired by Atlantic and Columbia to take studio pictures. After his stay in New York, he moved back to San Francisco during the height of the Psychedelic music scene. There, he took some of his most known photographs including the Hendrix photo.

This is a tough loss for the music community. Marshall was one of the most respected rock photographers and he will surely be missed. During the past few years he remained active in rock photography. Some of his latest subjects were The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Ben Harper. I was always struck by one of Marshall’s photographs of John Coltrane in 1960. The picture is a wonderful portrait of a genius in thought. It will always be one of my favorite Jim Marshall pictures.

Two Completely Different Pieces of Music News: Ben Folds vs. Singing Fishermen

22 Mar

I do not believe that I have ever posted two pieces of music news so far apart from each other on the music spectrum. But, there is a first for everything. So, without further ado, I present Ben Folds and the Fisherman’s Friends (that would actually be an awesome combination).

Ben Folds vs. Merlon the piano guy

There is a new Internet fad that has spread across cyberspace like a virus. It is called Chatroulette, and it enables any person throughout the world to randomly video chat with others. It is the perfect place to meet odd strangers. Some of these strangers decide to show a little too much of themselves on the video screen. And, when you get bored – or disgusted – you can simply disconnect and be brought to the next video conversation. A pianist known only as “Merlon” decided it would be a funny idea to melodically narrate the random people he encountered on Chatroulette. The video became viral and it is now well-known throughout the Internet community.

“Merlon’s Song”:

He looks a lot like Ben Folds. So much so that many people thought it actually was Folds in disguise. Heck, it is something the eccentric musician would do. On March 20, Folds performed his original version of Merlon’s idea at a concert in Charlotte, North Carolina. The end result was hilarious. Folds’ random serenading people was just great. Like usual, Folds was able to entertain a crowd in an unconventional manner. Here is his video below.

Folds’ Video:

Well, I am moving to England and joining a band of Fishermen who sing sea shanties. This is my new career goal. The Fisherman’s Friends, a group of sailors from Cornwall, have signed with Universal Music for around one million pounds ($1.53 million dollars). A music executive, Rupert Christie, was listening to the group of 10 sailors perform at a local bar when he decided that they were worth the deal. The mariners, who have been performing for more than 15 years, are surprised about the deal. “We don’t really know what to expect, to be honest — we’re just making it up as we go along,” said fisherman Baritone Brown (great name).

This is the classic success story and I am so happy for these guys. Their music is great and they definitely deserve the deal. Take a listen to one of their songs:

Let the Cinderella’s Rise and the Phish Swim

18 Mar

The annual March Madness tournament begins today at 12 p.m. Do you know what that   means? Some lucky team is going to fit into Cinderella’s slippers and march their way out of the first round and into surprise territory. Personally, I believe Cornell may make an appearance in upset city. But, if you want to be safe, pick the team with long hair and tight, white pants. The glam metal band from Philadelphia, PA would agree with your selection. So, to get the NCAA Tournament started off right, here is Cinderella’s, “Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone). The anthem for overzealous Cinderella basketball teams.

How can you not love Rolling Stone magazine covers? They are just very odd. It is funny because at first I did not realize they were wearing ice skates. Maybe they are all going ice-phishing. Do you like what I did there? I crack myself up an unhealthy amount of times. Anyway, Phish, the jam-band that is portrayed on ice in this picture, will be hitting the road this summer for a monster 29-date tour, according to Rolling Stone magazine. The tour will begin with a show on June 11 at Toyota Park in Chicago. Phish will end their tour with a two-night stay in Wantagh, NY at the Nikon Theater at Jones Beach. The Jones Beach Theater is close to my house and I have seen numerous concerts there. It is a wonderful venue when the weather is agreeable. The open theater is on the water and the light ocean wind that swirls around the theater is comforting and refreshing. So, Phans of Phish, rev up the environmentally responsible buses and gather some brews because it’s going to be a long trip with Phish this summer.

“When You’re Strange”: Johnny Depp Certainly Understands This.

15 Mar

Do you love the Doors? Do you like Johnny Depp’s silvery voice? Combine them and what you have is an odd psychedelic dream. Oh, excuse me. I mean you have “When You’re Strange: A Film About the Doors,” a 90-minute documentary depicting the band the Doors up to the death of their famous lead singer Jim Morrison.

Johnny Depp narrates this premier Doors’ documentary that takes an inside look into the wildly chimerical mind of Jim Morrison and his loyal band mates Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore. The famous rock quartet may have only been around for seven years, but the footage and music gained from their run was spectacular. Now, finally, some rare and previously unreleased footage will be released to the public on Friday, April 9.

Depp is honored to have the opportunity to narrate a film about The Doors. He said in a press release, “”Watching the hypnotic, hitherto unreleased footage of Jim, John, Ray and Robby, I felt like I experienced it all through their eyes. As a rock ‘n’ roll documentary, or any kind of documentary for that matter, it simply doesn’t get any better than this. What an honour to have been involved. I am as proud of this as anything I have ever done.”

Wow. These are fighting words from Depp. Is he more proud of this then his acting in “Finding Neverland.” I thought that was a pretty awesome movie. By the way, did you know that Depp is 46 years old? Anyway, Depp also will be reading verses from 15 poems written by Jim Morrison for the soundtrack which will be released a few days before the movie comes out.

I am quite excited for the film. The Doors were a mysterious band that paired the disturbed and intelligent mind of Jim Morrison with an extraordinary blend of psychedelic rock. They were popular and they never conceded to the curse of mainstream music. They were lively and effervescent, but also spaced-out and somewhat austere during their shows. They were a beautiful mix of music and musician and the band will forever go down as one of the best to ever take any stage.
