Court Links: The Who’s Superbowl Set-List and CD Release

1 Feb

Happy Monday everyone. The weekend in Philadelphia was great and while I did pass Citizens Bank Park and shout numerous obscenities towards it, my consumption of a real Philly cheesesteak from Jims was eye-opening (in a food kind of way). But, now I am back in Binghamton and Monday means links.

The Who’s Super Bowl set-list was somewhat revealed by Pete Townshend, lead guitarist for The Who, in an interview with Billboard. In a show that will hopefully not include any wardrobe malfunctions, Townshend stated that the show will include a “compact medley” of their signature classic-rock anthems.”We’re kinda doing a mashup of stuff,” the guitarist tells Billboard. “A bit of ‘Baba O’Riley,’ a bit of ‘Pinball Wizard,’ a bit of the close of ‘Tommy,’ a bit of ‘Who Are You,’ and a bit of ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again.’ It works — it’s quite a saga. A lot of the stuff that we do has that kind of celebratory vibe about it — we’ve always tried to make music that allows the audience to go a bit wild if they want to. Hopefully it will hit the spot.” The show should be rock n’roll at its finest so don’t just use halftime as a break to get more food.

CD Release

Smoke and Mirrors by Lifehouse

Lifehouse, which is oddly enough a rock opera from The Who, in many 20-30-year-old’s minds is a one-hit wonder band. “Hanging by a Moment,” which was released in 2000, is a great song. “You and Me,” despite its success as a single off of their self-titled 2005 release, is corny as heck and it is pretty bad. Anyway, while most people think of the band as a classic one and done, they have hit success with numerous other songs and have sold over 5 million records worldwide. In my opinion, they still released their best song first, but success has always found its way to the alt. rock band from the shores of Malibu. This new album is looking to combine the rock n’roll with the marketability that gave them their permanent spot in alt-rock fame.

You obviously haven’t done your homework. Lifehouse is far from being a one-hit-wonder.

Yes, Hanging By A Moment was the #1 most played Top40 song in 2001, but it didn’t stop there. The second album solidified the band as a touring unit… while the 3rd record spawned hits like You&Me, a song which broke records by spending more than 60 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, peaking at #5. The fourth album included the hits “First Time,” “Whatever It Takes” and “Broken,” which combined sold over 3 million digital downloads. To date Lifehouse has sold over 5 million albums.

“First Time” peaked at #3 on the Hot Adult Top 40.

The new single “Halfway Gone” is currently #5 on the VH1 Top20. Go do some research before calling a band a one-hit wonder.

Thanks for your learned feedback and changes have been made. The band has had certain success after their initial hit (however much “Hanging by a Moment” was a better song than anything they released after in my opinion).

The new album shall be interesting and we will see what the new decade will bring for the band
