Bob Dylan to Binghamton (For all you Upstate New Yorkers)

28 Sep

Folk troubadour Bob Dylan is coming back to Binghamton.

The legendary musician will roll into Binghamton University‘s Events Center for the second time. He performed one of the first ever concerts at the Events Center in November of 2004.

Dylan is scheduled to perform on Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale Oct. 9 at 10 a.m., with a pre-sale commencing at 10 a.m. on Oct. 5.

Magic City Productions, an Endicott-based promotions company, is accountable for Dylan’s Events Center date. The SA was not involved with the planning or monetary backing of this Fall concert.

The “Never Ending Tour” has become a appropriate name for Dylan’s ceaseless tour schedule since June 7, 1988. Dylan has performed with several musicians over the past 20 years for the around 100 shows he plays each year.

Dylan, who turned 69 in May, will release a new album of his earlier demo work on Oct. 19 this year. The album, “The Witmark Demos: 1962-1964” will include 47 demo recordings.

Dylan is perhaps best known as one of rock music’s first musical activists, blending civil rights and anti-war messages into his powerful lyric. His raspy croon has become a staple in the broad history of rock. Dylan has transcended both time and genres, arguably succeeding in playing everything from blues to country to jazz and swing.

Most recently, he released his 33rd studio album, “Together Through Life” in April of 2009 and his 34th, “Christmas in the Heart,” a Christmas album, in October of the same year.

Comments:

Yes! Finally a good concert at Binghamton University (the school I go to). I have personally had enough of Binghamton bringing in terrible rappers. Well, this is not being run by our Student Association so, I guess I do not have Binghamton University to thank for this. I saw Dylan a few years ago at Nassau coliseum and while the concert was slightly strange, it was still awesome to see him perform. I am psyched for this concert. There’s Something Happening Here – Buffalo Springfield Reunion

14 Sep

Well, the Jets home opener did not go as well as it could of. A loss combined with the loss of a fantastic defensive force in Kris Jenkins has left Jets’ fans pessimistic. But, like I have said, let’s wait to see how things go next week. But, do you want some good news Jets fans.

Ah, yeah!

It may have been 42 years too long, but, Buffalo Springfield will reunite for Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit in Mountain View, California on Oct. 23 and 24. Original members Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay will perform.

According to Furay, Young’s longtime bassist Rick Rosas will sit in for the late Bruce Palmer and Crosby, Stills and Nash drummer Joe Vitale will substitute for the late Dewey Martin.

Furay said in regards to the concert, “I called (after Neil Young asked him to call) and he asked me if I’d be up for a reunion at the Bridge School Benefit. He said, ‘If you’re into it, I think Stephen will be into it.’ The three of us then arranged a conference call, chit-chatted for a few minutes, and planned it all out. The last time I was on-stage with them was the last Buffalo Springfield show at the Long Beach Arena back in 1968. Our lives have gone in different directions and I wouldn’t say that we’re close friends, but we’re friends and its an opportunity for us to get together again for a good cause. I’m very excited.”

While I will not be able to attend the benefit I am quite excited to hear this news. Maybe a tour? Man, that would be awesome. And then the remaining members of the Byrds can get together, add Graham Nash and play a tri-show between the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and an encore of Crosby Stills Nash Young and Friends. Well, a man can dream.

“The setlist will probably be composed of the three albums, though probably more of the first album with a few of the second album and maybe ‘On The Way Home’ from the last one,” said Furay. I really have no idea, though. I’m just going to show up and have a good time.”

Will they listen to me and tour after the benefit?

“Whether anything happens after this, I certainly don’t know. Generally speaking, it’s Neil that gets these things set up and happening. We’re not really saying ‘Hey New York and Chicago and Miami and Denver, we’re coming to your city.”

Well, it is not a no.

Here is some classic Springfield (the Buffalo kind) to brighten up your night.

Sing Sing Sing

27 Aug

More like sleep sleep sleep. I am tired. Who said living in a house would be hard? Dam, days with endless shopping, cooking, cleaning. Wow, I should have thanked my Mom more.

Well, I am in officially moved in. Internet and cable are working fine and right now I am watching my poor Mets actually win a game. That may not last. But, I had a few seconds to myself and I wanted to definitely post as soon as I could. Because…get ready for…

You like the picture inclusion? I don’t know, I thought it was clever. Well, as for a new posting schedule I am thinking something along the lines of:

Monday: Links

Tuesday: Lyricist of the Day

Wednesday: Anything from SWOD to Song of the Day

Thursday: Links

Friday: Feature Post

Of course, there is no guarantee that this will remain the schedule, but, for now it looks good with my school schedule. Also, the Music Court may be adding a new writer. The music writer from lolzplace.com may be providing you with some quality psychedelic music reporting in upcoming days. Keep a look out. Now, let’s get away from this boring stuff. How about some links?

I have two interesting places for you to visit.

So, how do they really sing?

One would presume that in the ears of a classical singer, heavy metal vocalists may not be looked at favorably. Well, that is not entirely true. Ozzy was not spared.

http://www.invisibleoranges.com/2010/07/ask-a-real-musician-5-classic-male-metal-singers/

Claudia Friedlander, a classically-trained, New York-based voice teacher who knows virtually nothing about metal, is featured in this post from Invisible Oranges. Her responsibility? Judge metal voices. And, besides the overly raspy Ozzy (who Friedlander asks how long of a career did he have? That’s a big HAHA) Bruce and Rob get good ratings. If you know who these musicians are based on their first names then you know your metal. If not, still click on this article and check it out. Because, I am sure many of you have thought while banging your head to screeching guitars…I wonder how this singer matches up with true vocalists?

I wonder what Friedlander would have to say about Bob Dylan. Hmm…Bob Dylan.

Like a Rolling Canvas?

Yes…Mr. Dylan may not be the greatest singer in the world, but, the man is incredibly talented. He is not only an inspirational musicians, but, he can paint. Dylan will be showing new paintings and drawings on display at Denmark’s Statens Museum for Kunst September 4th through January 30th.

Steven Tyler and Wyclef Jean are Giving…

23 Aug

Steven Tyler, the flamboyant lead singer of Aerosmith, will be seeing a lot of Cryin’ soon. Reports from Aerosmith bassist, Tom Hamilton, state that Tyler, and his magnificent rock voice, will be occupying one of the open seats on the ever-changing panel of American Idol judges. The music has stopped and Tyler has fought his way onto a seat in front of some fantastic soda subliminal messaging.

"It was horrible, but, this coke product is amazing"

“Steven is doing American Idol. The ink is dry on that,” Hamilton told the Newark Star-Ledger . “Steven is someone who absolutely lives to be in front of an audience, and the people closest to him know how witty and entertaining he can be. I don’t know if American Idol will be rock ‘n’ roll enough for him, but it is an opportunity for millions of people to see another side of Steven Tyler.”

Let me predict this now. American Idol, watch out. I know Tyler looks and probably is an exceptionally nice guy, but I bet you he is hard on contestants. The man has tremendous talent. He knows music. And, he will not put Abdul fluff on bad performances. Plus, if a rocker stinks, Tyler will certainly let him hear it. I don’t watch Idol…anymore…but, I am sort of interested in seeing how this turns out. Steven Tyler will be giving advice and – if Fox is lucky – better ratings for their struggling show.

In other giving news…Wyclef Jean is not giving up in his longing to run for president in his native Haiti. After receiving a flat-out no, no, no from the country’s elections board Friday night, Jean has said he will send a lawyer to to a Haitian court today to appeal with the national electoral dispute office. Jean claims to have his paperwork in check and is certainly genuine about his presidential aspirations.

Look, I just can’t say no if his status is correct. Obviously, the elections board does not think so, but, if the court overturns their decision and tells Jean he can run for president, then who am I to say that it’s terrible. Heck, I just don’t know. Sean Penn may think that the man is facetious, but, only the citizens of Haiti will have a say. And, if Jean can prove that he is not just riding a disaster and hot air then good for him. His running is the joy of Democracy and if he gets the go ahead to run his race I wish him luck.

Unconventional Covers

19 Aug

A lot of linkage going on this week. Today, I was doing some searching on fark.com and ran into this:

That’s right, a Gregorian Monks chant cover of “Comfortably Numb.” The Pink Floyd epic is haunting, but, this is just damn near ghoulish. It’s scary. It also got me thinking. There are many unconventional covers out there. That sparked a search for some of the coolest, most atypical and somewhat esoteric covers of rock standards. First, let’s start with Andy McKee’s great guitar cover of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”

Now, that’s just a cool piece of music. Next up, a choir version of “Smells like Teen Spirit.”

And, last, but certainly not least, a little “Umbrella” by Biffy Clyro. Enjoy!

Feel free to add some of your own choices for unconventional covers in the comments section below.
