A very happy 94th birthday wishes to the pioneer of the guitar, Mr. Les Paul. Awesome video from 10 years ago of him performing some of his old hits from the 1950’s. He truly is the guitar iron man.

Paul McCartney is officially opening concerts at Citi Field, the New York Mets home baseball park. He will be performing on July 17th and 18th, 44 years after the Beatles played at Shea Stadium, the Mets old park. Should shape up to be an incredible concert with special guests and unbelievable music.

This link will lead you to one of the most awesome game trailers. It is for The Beatles: Rock Band and it sure looks like it is going to be an incredible game. Get your rock band group together and draw straws for who has to sing because finally people are going to want to be you Ringo (Just Kidding, I love you Ringo).

This is the trailer for Taking Woodstock which is set to premiere on August 14th. It is about a young man who attempts to save his parent’s motel by allowing Woodstock to occur on his land for profit. Unexpectedly, he sets off a culturally defining moment in history. Demetri Martin stars as the teen. This should be interesting. The movie also stars Eugene Levy, which assures to me I will love the film, and it is directed by Ang Lee, so as long as Hulk does not make a cameo we should all be fine.

I have to point out something first. Right now on my itunes playlist I am listening to “You’re the Cocaine,” by Joshua James who, while being an extraodinary musician is in love with singing about cocaine. No big deal, except it is going to be followed by Eric Clapton’s “Cocaine.” This, of course, is a completely random list. I do not have a cocaine playlist, but is someone trying to tell me something?

Anyways, on from my stupidity to the links of the day and boy do I have two great ones today.

First, we get one coming from The Independent in London documenting a book coming out by a former Jimi Hendix roadie claiming that Jimi was actually killed by his manager who Jimi was going to fire. Manager Michael Jeffrey had recently put a 2 million dollar life insurance policy on Jimi with him as the benificiary. In a drunken guilt-ridden plea, the roadie, James “Tappy” Wright, apparently heard straight from Jeffrey’s mouth, “He was worth more to me dead then alive.” Read the article and possibly go and find the book (I know I will). Jeffrey is now dead (ironically died from a plane crash 2 years afterwards), but still this just adds another peg into rock and roll mysteries. Was it a forced overdose? I hope not but as much as you attempt to avoid being swayed it sounds oddly convincing.

On the brighter side of life I have for you an incredible video. A guitar teacher, Brodie Cummings, from Santa Rosa performing 100 of the most famous rock riffs in a little under eight minutes. The list of the songs is off to the right so you can follow along. I especially like the awesome “Eruption” at the end. The guy is very good. Five Jimi songs also appear in this rock tribute.

Great link from Jamesgunn.com documenting their compilation of the worst 20 songs of all time that they gathered from votes. Great hilarious videos as well. Right now I got to say #7 on their list is my #1 and that is the unquestionably horrible “We Built This City,” by Starship. Man, why did Jefferson Airplane have to make the upgrade to space travel. WHY!?!

Also, a fantastic read from Slate.com on the “Salinger of Rock and Roll,” Jeff Mangum who appeared out of nowhere with his band Neutral Milk Hotel and changed the way many listen to music with “In An Aeroplane Over The Sea.”

               – Here is a great music related article. The story behind famous band names (in case you could not read the link above). It is from Cracked.com who proclaim themselves as “America’s only Humor and Video Site since 1958,” so it is quite funny. My personal favorite is the story of Chumbawamba. The band that sang that up and down epic, “I get knocked down but I get up again, your never gonna’ keep me down,” in 1997. Apparently, band member Danbert Nobacon was in a perfectly sober dream when he had to go to the bathroom. Yet, when reaching the bathroom he wasn’t sure which door to enter because instead of men and women there were the signs Chumba and Wamba. Now, personally, if I was Nobacon, I would have entered the Chumba door because Wamba obviously is W for Women and Chumba definitely represents C for Crazy!
