The Music Court

          For the first installment of the “Song of the Day” let us dig a little deep into the music realm and pull out a song that many may have heard but few know. “Waiting for My Real Life to Begin,” is a relatively obscure song by Colin Hay, the man who once fronted Men at Work. Yes, the odd Australian-Reggae hybrid who wrote the painfully catchy “Down Under.” Did you know that their album, “Business as Usual,” as well as their song “Down Under,” both stood at #1 in the United States at the same time? This made them the first Australian band to pull off this impressive feat, but I digress.

           For all those who believe they have seemingly seen every Scrubs episode, possibly because I believe countless re-runs of scrubs are on every single television channel, you may have heard this song on the episode entitled “My Philosophy.” At the end of the episode Jill Tracy leads the Scrubs cast in singing “Waiting for My Real Life to Begin,” as she passes from heart failure. This moment proved two things. Everyone in the Scrubs cast can apparently sing (Don’t you just love editing) and wow can Scrubs continue to get viewers to tear up.

           The song is wonderful though. It is defined by an acoustic chord progression that is perfectly picked and strummed with every accented word sung by the talented Colin Hay. The lyrics wash over listeners as oddly hopeful. It almost seems like Colin Hay is successfully teaching listeners through his verse. The song ends with the lines, “On a clear day I can see, see for a long way,” and Hay makes sure to string out the words “see” and “way” over his chord progression highlighting his point. We all wait for our ship to come valiantly sailing to the shore to pick us up and help us bring dreams to the real world. But, in reality, all one must do is open up their heart and every day will be clear. This is why this song, while also being tremendously catchy, is such a great listen. It may not stick in your mind as a memorable epic song like a “Wish You Were Here,” or a “Layla,” but it will provide you with a soft listen and a good message.
