Close your eyes and Spencer Sabo will take you away literally in another dimension with his latest album, entitled Color In The Gray Machine. The feelings of another world, powered by an undertone of galactic space and ethereal fluidity goes nicely with the fitting project, which is called Mind The Journey. Upon listening to the newly released album, one can almost find an undertone of nostalgia and psych rock as well within the sounds and strategic musical arrangement. The track, Rose Colored Glasses builds up an almost synth dynamic with a touch of grit and borderline 90s gritty grunge sound. The vocals are drawn out in a smoothing whirlwind and the instrumental genius builds an environment for the already strong standalone song. On the other end of the spectrum, Dessert almost sets up a very mellow, yet reflective ambiance, almost exhibiting strong reminders of glam rock. Recorded in Boston native’s Sabo’s studio, Color In The Gray Machine delivers an album centered around retro sounds and its coexistence in a modern world.

29 Dec

The soft piano and symphonic melodies start off the sound of Sea White Salt right, with the vocals of Joseph Sant effortlessly accompanying the meticulously placed ambiance, drawing you in for more. Recorded with producer Gabriel Galvin in overnight marathon sessions, Sea White Salt delivers a resilient message. The overall tone of Sea White Salt carries the environmental inspirations of Seattle, Washington and Brooklyn, New York. When one listens to the album, one can cross the parallels of musical textures with Sant’s background. On the standout track of Sea White Salt, one can hear the soul and kind hearted love within the track, that transcends as an undertone on the EP. Drawing comparisons of their sound to Broken Social Scene and the dream pop circuit,  Joseph Sant’s deliverance and creation does not disappoint. With longtime collaborators, Stirling Krussing, Tyler Graham, Gabriel, Galvin, and Georgia Tan, the five piece band definitely works together to create a dream pop sound for all to hear.

Nobody Quite So True, Temporary Hero Delivers A Storytelling Anthem

8 Dec

Listening to the initial 1950s doo-wop opening track of the album “Chet”, Temporary Hero sweeps you away into another world. With folky undertones of sound of snapping fingers on tracks and ba da da’s, one can say the approach Temporary Hero takes in his music stands out. It should not surprise new listeners to the band, that he has already made two other albums previously, paying tribute to Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. Some tracks on the album such as Time After Time, and I Get Along Without You Very Well, sound a little bit more electronic inspired than the soul and borderline hip hop sounding  I’ve Never Been In Love Before. The sum of the lyrics on this album point to that of more than your typical musician, it goes more alongside the thought of finger tips tracing outlines of a writer’s innermost thoughts, building upon the layers of surreal dreams. Without a doubt, Temporary Hero makes listeners experience a variety of emotions from the lighthearted heart thump to a sense of melancholic daydream.

First Sight Brings New Meaning To True Love

vannorden2-298x300

With no better way to describe Van Norden, as having dream pop influences, this Vancouver musician carries an almost gothic sound to his music, and First Sight brings it to you in a powerful way. The overall sound does not sound cluttered at all, which sometimes is hard to do amongst the EDM scene. The lyrical quality of First Sight does not back down either with mentioning of constellations, finding each other within space, and the feeling of that intense love at first sight feeling. Prior to releasing First Sight, Van Norden has experience being an acoustic folk musician, frequently playing with the LA based SPINdriftr. With a sound that could be best described as having international influences, it’s to no surprise that Van Norden frequently collaborates with musicians in Canada and Los Angeles. The track overall delivers a deep, almost ethereal environment rather than being an ordinary track alone, and for that, we are excited to see what Van Norden has next in store.

You Said, Tumbler Premieres With Beautiful Psychedelic Tunes

5 Nov

Sounds reminiscent of the English countryside, Tumbler manages to carry an interesting sound overall. Comparable to James Taylor and the Beatles, Tumbler demonstrates a lightness in their sound and lyrics as well. The beautiful mentioning of memories, nature, and the feelings of what it means to be home is also interwoven throughout You Said. The track, Bueller, stands out with lyrical metaphors “pouring in on porcelain skin”, and mentioning talk about “lover’s frown’s” and the power of sunlight. The overall sound of Tumbler is a mixture of subtle eagerness and reflective coolness. With their full sound carrying the almost magical lyrics, Tumbler provides more than just sound to one’s ears, they give listener’s an experience of painted memories.
