Christopher Sluka delivers enchanting visuals in the latest video for Vampire’s Ball with an opening piano intro that draws similarities to David Bowie in his vocals. Directed by Eric Bishop, the video begins with a view of a boardwalk and visual images around the idea of common place areas that everyone frequents to that of Sluka in front of an ethereal backdrop and then finishing into a statement on social activism, something our world needs right now. With lyrics like they cry all the time, and we may never look back demonstrates the uncertainty in the world, both in pandemic and social issues. You can definitely sense an international tone to his music and a worldly view to what is important to this group. Finding musical inspiration in Japan, Sluka previously had released albums there as he felt more connected to the musical energy. If you aren’t inspired already, Christopher Sluka is an artist through and through, creating oil paintings and having shown his art in galleries all around the world. Tying the greatness of the band with an accompanying visual masterpiece with love, pain, and hope wrapped all in one will exceed audience’s expectations as they tune in.

Behind The Veil Of Light From Nyxem Catapults Dark-Synth Rock Into A New Universe

14 May

Close your eyes and take a listen to Nyxem from Jonah Hontos. It will remind you of the best qualities of dark synth rock meets the audio tracks of nostalgic video games all in one. There is a heavy mixture of synths and hardware sounds in the album. By merging the worlds of synth wave, metal, progressive, and game music, it all yields this sound that is definitely futuristic but something that is in a category of all its own. A track on the album that carries so much musical textures and synth is Ra In Thy Rising. Something about the way the song opens and goes in an upwards crescendo followed by the lows, definitely shows a variant way of the wave of the sound. War Engine comes at a close second for interesting compositions on the album. It halfway wants you to jump up and get running, and another part of you wants to put on your headphones and soak up the fast tracked sounds that have a lot of energy and get-up to them. A fascinating part of these songs is that no actual guitars are involved as instruments from Nyxem, its all created by synthesizers that get run through high gain amp modeling software. By mixing the ideas of the future, the blends of traditional progressive rock and metal, and sounds of game music, get ready to be transported to another world.

Hurricane Sandy – Blue Moon

2 Nov

I thought this was a particularly cogent picture to choose from the massive wreckage of Hurricane Sandy. What was once jokingly coined the Frankenstorm because of its combination of a massive nor’easter and a Hurricane (and its near-Halloween arrival), quickly shaped into one of the worst storms to ever hit the Northeast. The picture represents a loss of innocence; a fun roller coaster meets the strength of a storm. It is almost unreal to witness the devastation. As a New Yorker, I can confidently say that individuals from New York and New Jersey are gritty. We handle adversity well. But the force of Mother Nature has left almost all residents shocked. And we are still feeling it. My house is without power, but my family is safe, and that is all that is important.

Although I experienced the storm, I am writing this post miles away from New York. I am in San Diego covering a conference for my work. Thus, I do have an opportunity to let you all know that I am alright, and I look forward to getting back to posting on a more consistent basis.

It goes without saying that my posting schedule has been cut lately. It has almost been nonexistent. You can expect a Music Court revival after the new year. Yes, come 2013 I can guarantee a schedule of more frequent posting. Until then, I hope to complete at least two posts a week (one being a new band).

New bands please continue sending your material to musiccourt@gmail.com. If I do not get back to you immediately, please be patient. I receive a large amount of e-mails, and I usually read them in bulk (once or twice every week). I will get back to you. New bands I would like to cover are put on a list, and I follow it chronologically. I love listening to all of the new music and writing engaging posts about them. So, how about we get to some music…or rather a video.

I am having some difficulty embedding it, but since I really do enjoy its inventive structure, I urge you to check out the video of The Lost Brothers’ “Blue Moon in September”. The Lost Brothers are made up of Mark McCausland and Oisin Leech, an Irish duo. They released their first indie/folk album in 2008. The video of hand-crafted props and puppetry tells an odd story that features paper clouds, a clay moon, and a baritone beluga. The song itself swoons like the light rocking of a ship on the seas…or in the case until you are attacked by a sea monster.
